English Learners

Program Overview

The goal of the Jackson Public Schools EL (English Learners) program is to enable English language learners to become proficient in listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English. The ESL program emphasizes the mastery of English language skills, as well as mathematics, science and social studies, as integral parts of the academic goals for all students to enable English language learners to participate equitably in school.

JPS has designated five elementary schools as EL sites. These schools provide intensive daily English instruction:

  • Boyd Elementary (4531 Broadmeadow Drive)
  • Johnson Elementary (1339 Oak Park Drive)
  • Bates Elementary (3180 McDowell Road Ext.)
  • Spann Elementary (1615 Brecon Drive)
  • Sykes Elementary (3555 Simpson Street)

Each designated EL school employs an ESL teacher to provide services. For more information, please call (601) 960-8707.

For questions regarding services provided to students at McWillie Elementary, please contact our school-level coordinator, Ashley Rogers.
